Private Herbert Moore

 

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known for certain. Although there are a number of possibilities, he was probably either the Herbert Moore born on 15 March 1894 at the Bawn, Pomeroy, County Tyrone, one of thirteen children of farmer (later land steward) Robert Moore and his wife Jane (née Dinning); or the James Herbert Moore born on 25 June 1893 at Ballygrooby, Drummaul, County Antrim, one of thirteen children of winding master (later linen factory overlooker) William Moore and his wife Martha (née Whiteside).

Moore enlisted in the North Irish Horse about November 1915 (regimental number not known).

At the end of December 1916 he was one of forty North Irish Horsemen who volunteered to transfer to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. The formal transfer took place on 9 January 1917, and on the same day they embarked for France, where they were posted to the 10th Battalion, joining it at Ploegsteert Wood on the Ypres front on 16 January. Moore was issued regimental number 40656.

Moore remained with the 10th Battalion until it was disbanded in January 1918. He was then posted to the 2nd Battalion, A Company. In April that year, however, he fell ill, and was admitted to No.4 Stationary Hospital. Two months later he was moved, probably to a hospital in the UK for further treatment. Whether he saw any further active service during the war is not known at present.
